Abstract

The outburst of Novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to SARS-CoV-2 has caused havoc throughout the world. There has been an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases due to the adaptation of the virus in any environment. Currently, supportive care and non-specific treatment to ameliorate the symptoms of the patient are being considered. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop targeted therapies along with traditional herbal medicine as a combination therapy to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The current systematic review highlights the COVID-19, the probable mechanism of action of the virus, its transmission, and the role of traditional Indian herbal medicine acting as a complementary system to the available health promotion drugs against COVID-19. Additionally, emphasis on clean surroundings and preventive measures against COVID-19, on-going clinical trials, and diagnosis has been discussed. The herbal medicine system can be used as a supplement to improve the immune system of human beings. More studies and clinical trials are required to determine the efficacy of the herbal plants to be used as a complementary medicine/novel alternative therapeutic approach in the management of COVID-19.
