Opportunities and challenges for Vietnam’s trade in CPTPP
Authors
Abstract
The study aims to generalize the current situation of trade and analyze Vietnam’s imports and
exports in the CPTPP by commodity category using the trade indicator method. Research data is
conducted from 2001 to 2018 on the official website of UNComtrade. The article has proven that
Vietnam will have to compete with Malaysia, Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Singapore, and have
many opportunities to boost exports with Australia, Canada and Japan in the CPTPP. Regarding
product groups, the CPTPP will be a great opportunity for Vietnam to boost exports of textile
products, leather shoes and wooden products; but it will bring many challenges to the group of
vegetables, fruits, seafood and electronics. Based on these findings, the article suggests a number
of policies to promote trade between Vietnam and CPTPP countries in the future.
