Abstract

This study aimed to obtain a deeper understanding of objective and subjective aspects of career success, by examining the impact of HRM practices (compensation, performance appraisal, training, and development) and career motivation on objective and subjective aspects of career success with a sample of 289 employees in the Jordanian banking sector. The results showed that objective and subjective aspects are important factors to form career success. Results also indicated that HRM practices (compensation and performance appraisal) and career motivation have a significant positive impact on the objective and subjective aspects of career success, and that career motivation partially mediated the relationship between HRM practices (compensation and performance appraisal) and career success. Academic researchers should pay attention to both the objective and subjective aspects of career success, since each aspect reflects an important and different part of career success. Future studies should explore other factors of organizational behaviour that may explain the objective and subjective aspects of career success.
