Abstract

An English Language Learner (often capitalized as an English Language Learner or abbreviated as an ELL) is a word used in certain English-speaking countries, such as the USA and Canada, to denote a person who studies English in addition to their native language or any other language that they can speak. The teaching and evaluation of students, their cultural context, and the attitudes of classroom teachers towards ELLs have all been described as factors in the achievement of ELL students. Several approaches have been proposed to effectively teach ELLs, including bringing their home cultures into the classroom, engaging them in language-specific content-area teaching from the outset, and incorporating literature into their learning programs. Some educational advocates, particularly in the United States, promote the use of other words, such as non-native English or emerging bilinguals.
